Rise and fall of 17 alfa-hydroxyprogesteronecaproate
17 alpha-hydroxyprogesteronecaproate (17-OHPC), a syntheticprogestogen, wasfirstapproved in 1956 totreat a variety of gynecological and obstetric conditions in pregnantwomen, includingthreatenedabortion and preterm birth. Itwaswidelyprescribedtopregnantwomen in the USA and Europe in the 1950s and 1960s. Studiesover time haveshownthat it is not successful in thisgroup of patients. Additionally, comparedtotheoffsprings not exposedto 17-OHPC, offspringsexposed had an increased risk of anycancer.
